NISE-Stim
Non-invasive Spinal Stimulation

What is NISE-Stim?
NISE-Stim (Non-Invasive Spinal Electrical Stimulation) is an innovative therapeutic approach that uses gentle electrical stimulation to activate the nervous system and encourage functional movement. Developed in 2017 by Gerti Motavalli, in collaboration with Dr. Gad Alon, this treatment is designed to promote communication between the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles.
Small surface electrodes are placed over specific regions of the spine and body to deliver low-level electrical impulses. These impulses help activate muscles, improve neuromuscular coordination, and support motor, sensory, and autonomic functions.
How does NISE-Stim work?
Targeted Electrode Placement
Surface electrodes are strategically positioned along the spine and selected muscle groups to deliver therapeutic electrical stimulation.
Muscle Activation
The stimulation produces electrical signals that help activate nerves and muscles, encouraging muscle contractions and reinforcing movement patterns.
Supporting the Autonomic Nervous System
In addition to improving motor function, NISE-Stim may also enhance autonomic nervous system activity, which can positively influence breathing, circulation, digestion, and bowel and bladder function.
Tone Modulation
Clients having to manage spasticity can find relief through the use of NISE-Stim parameters that help to modulate tone. Using these specific neural pathways set at frequencies that
help to suppress pathological reflex activity, we are able to dampen spasticity and work on increasing our clients range of motion, improve functional mobility and provide relief in areas previously difficult to do so.

What are the benefits of using NISE-Stim?

Safe & Non-Invasive
NISE-Stim delivers gentle electrical stimulation through adhesive surface electrodes, eliminating the need for injections, surgery, or other invasive procedures.
Encourages Neuroplasticity
By stimulating the nervous system, NISE-Stim promotes the formation and strengthening of neural pathways. This enhanced communication between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves may improve movement, coordination, sensation, and overall function.
Customized for Every Client
Treatment parameters are individualized based on each child's diagnosis, goals, and response to therapy, creating a personalized approach to maximize progress.
Am I or my child a candidate for NISE-Stim?
NISE-Stim has been used with clients experiencing a variety of neurological and orthopedic conditions, including:
-
Cerebral palsy
-
Spina bifida
-
Spinal cord injuries
-
Other conditions affecting movement and motor control
Positive outcomes have been observed in children ranging from infancy through adolescence, and there is currently no defined upper age limit for potential benefit.
The therapy has also been successfully used with many individuals who have spinal cysts, programmable VP shunts, or certain surgically implanted metal hardware. A healthcare provider should always determine whether NISE-Stim® is appropriate for each individual.
NISE-Stim® may not be appropriate for individuals who have:
-
A pacemaker or other implanted electronic stimulation device (including VNS systems)
-
Pregnancy
-
Active cancer
-
Uncontrolled infantile spasms
-
Certain spinal rod implants
Your therapist and physician will determine whether this treatment is safe for your specific medical history.
Why choose ParaFisio for your NISE-Stim treatment?
Whole Person Approach
At ParaFisio Therapy & Wellness, we believe in treating the whole person, not just individual impairments. Rather than using NISE-Stim in isolation, we integrate it into functional movements and purposeful activities to address multiple areas at once while working toward each client's individual goals. Combined with our training in the TheraSuit Method, DMI and years of experience, we aim to help our clients see greater outcomes using evidence-based approaches.
Levels 1 & 2 Certified
Our therapists are certified in NISE-Stim levels 1 & 2, utilizing the power of NISE-Stim to strengthen, improve sensation, repair and stimulate the nervous system, and modulate tone/spasticity.
