What is Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a cutting-edge, comprehensive therapeutic framework used by certified physical and occupational therapists to treat children with gross motor impairments, neurological conditions, and developmental delays.

Rather than relying on passive stretching or assisted play, DMI uses specific, structured exercises to provoke an active, automatic motor response from your child. The core philosophy is rooted in neurorehabilitation science: by exposing the child’s body to gravity and demanding active muscle responses, DMI exploits neuroplasticity—the brain’s natural ability to rewire itself and forge new neural pathways.

DMI is uniquely effective because it does not require a child to have a specific cognitive level or follow complex verbal commands. It communicates directly with the central nervous system through movement, verticality, and structural handling.

The Core Pillars of DMI Therapy

What makes DMI distinctly different—and often vastly faster than traditional pediatric physical therapy—comes down to four fundamental tenets:
 

1. Distal Handling (Less Support, More Independence)
In traditional therapy, a therapist often supports a struggling child at the trunk or hips. DMI flips this approach by utilizing distal support. Your therapist will hold the child as far away from the center of the body as possible—often at the thighs, calves, or even the ankles. By providing support only at the lowest points, the child is forced to activate their own core, hips, and postural muscles to stabilize themselves against gravity.

 

2. Movement Against Gravity
Every DMI exercise intentionally challenges the child's sensory, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems by moving them dynamically through space. Verticality and structural alignment are emphasized in every position, teaching the developing brain what it feels like to be upright, balanced, and vertically aligned.

 

3. Gradual Progression toward Autonomy
As your child replicates an exercise and the movement patterns become more automatic, the therapist systematically reduces the level of support. A movement that started with support at the knees graduates to support at the ankles, and finally to complete independent execution.

 

4. High Repetition & Somatosensory Input
During a typical DMI session, specific exercises are repeated multiple times to solidify the brain-body connection. The strong tactile and sensory information sent from the joints up to the brain fine-tunes automatic balance and motor planning.
